Branding. If Not You, Then Who?

Recently on Ideal Publicity’s #PRCafe we discussed the topic of personal branding, this was one of my favorite chats for so many reasons- the main reason being that personal branding never goes out of style. There is definitely an art to personal branding and no matter what field you’re in, you should want to be a master at that art. Here are some useful tips on how you can enhance your personal brand.

Networking Yes, I made it a point to discuss this first. Not because it’s the only thing that matters, but because it’s one of the major things people do wrong when it comes to personal branding. Networking is not going out and simply handing out business cards. If you know about a networking event beforehand, you should definitely take advantage and do your research on who is going to be attending or maybe even speaking at the event. It will save you a lot of time and you’ll waste a lot less business cards if you already have an idea of who you want to connect with at the event and how the two of you might be able to work together in the future. Going to a “networking” event for a cocktail and just to pass out business cards to 50 random people is a serious waste of time and energy. People rarely follow up with business cards, they follow up with people who make a good impression.

Style Pay attention to the things you wear, this especially applies to females. Whether you’re going to an investors meeting or job interview, bringing extra attention to your feminine curves probably isn’t necessary. For me, this was one of the more difficult things when it came to personal branding. I knew how to dress appropriately, but when you’re at events all the time where people are taking pictures and putting them online, you want to look your best. My suggestion would be to incorporate a stylist, even if it is just for a basic consultation. I hired a stylist a few months back and it has been a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders.

Seek Help Have no fear of outsourcing even when it’s for personal things. Marketing factors into personal branding, so if you’re clueless why not hire a professional to give you some guidance? Marketing consultations are affordable and usually and can be done in as little as an hour.

Knowledge Never underestimate this. How are you staying on top of things within your industry, and the world for that matter if you do not read? (waits for answer). The rate of people that do not utilize their gift to read is alarming. Knowledge never hurts anyone or any business. Per one of my mentors, I recommend reading for at least 45 minutes a day. After doing this for a few days, I was amazed at the wealth of knowledge I received as well as the change in my mindset. Of course to generate the right results, you want to choose wisely when it comes to the material you read.

You are your biggest client/customer Keep in mind that a lot of times people will buy into you. Most of the time no one wants to hire, buy from, or work with someone they can’t get along with. Make sure you have yourself in check first before you are soliciting customers or clientele. When putting yourself in check, always remember to be yourself!
