How can you keep up with the latest events, news, and happenings in your area? If you live in Baltimore, DC, New York or Boston then The Fab Empire should be your first stop. The popular site promises to deliver information and highlights on the hottest parties, shows, and events.
IP: Start by telling us more about yourself and your business (educational background, hometown, age you started your business, how business came about, etc.)
I’m a graduate of Hofstra University where I majored in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in political science. The Fab Empire was founded in 2007 by our editor in chief Joi- Marie McKenzie. We were fresh out of undergrad when we started at 21& 22 years old. Joi and I were both born and raised in Baltimore, MD. The site was originally a blog spot entitled DCFab that covered nightlife in the District. Soon after BmoreFab, NYFab and BostonFab came along and thefabempire.com was born. The site really took off because we were the first blog to hold nightclubs and promoters accountable for providing quality nightlife. We also cover a vast variety of exclusive events in each city.
IP: Quote that keeps you motivated?
“What I know is that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come.” – Oprah
IP: What has been your biggest obstacle being a young entrepreneur and how did you overcome it?
Our biggest obstacle and also lesson to quote our editor in chief is “understanding that failing is ok.” Failures can bring blessings and we’ve all learned so much through running the site.
IP: How has age factored into your success?
Sometimes when you’re young and a (woman) you’re automatically underestimated. I remember in the beginning some brushed us off because of our age, but now they pay attention.
IP: Describe a day in the life of (company name)?Where do you see your company in the next 5 years?
A day in the life for the editors and writers at thefabempire starts with checking emails of course to see if any publicist, promoters or other business owners have sent us any thing post worthy, chatting amongst ourselves, surfing the net for stories in our respective cities and covering exclusive events at night. In the next five years I see thefabempire.com still thriving with a new group of young fabulous women covering events and expanded to even more cities.
IP: What advice would you give up and coming entrepreneurs?
Have faith and don’t be afraid to fall, just make sure you get back up.
IP: What blogs and publications do you read to get guidance as an entrepreneur?
I like inc.com, Black Enterprise, Wall Street Journal and DigiFabelle.
IP: If you could pick a celebrity to be the spokesperson for your company/brand who would it be and why?
Beyonce (Joi’s going to hurt me for saying that). I say Beyonce because she’s the epitome of what it means to be a fabulous woman who runs her own empire and is a positive role model for not only women, but everyone.
IP: Outside of your business, what are your other interests?
I love to read, write and produce great television.
Anything else you would like to add? (pictures of merchandise or logo, additional facts about your business, links, upcoming events/promotions, etc.)
